East Kent Exercise Referral Scheme

What is the scheme and how does it work?

  • The Exercise Referral Scheme is designed to initiate long term lifestyle changes by encouraging an increase in your physical activity levels. If both you and your health professional (e.g. GP, practice nurse, physiotherapist etc) think it would be beneficial for you to join the Exercise Referral Scheme call the Exercise Referral Line on 0800 849 4000, where a member of the team will register your details and talk through your activity options with you.

  • The cost varies between exercise referral providers and will depend on the activity you choose to participate in.

Where can I access the scheme?

  • There are a number of exercise referral providers in your area, ranging from council run sports and leisure centres, privately owned health clubs and Kent Adult Education facilities to individual physical activity leaders who work in community settings. All of the exercise referral providers that offer activities on the Exercise Referral Scheme have been assessed by physical activity specialists to ensure that you receive a safe and effective service supported by qualified and experienced staff. Kent Adult Education Health Referral Scheme 2009 - 2010

Do any of these apply to you?

• Recovering from a long term illness
• Depressed, stressed or anxious
• Feeling isolated, perhaps due to bereavement, redundancy, divorce etc.
• Weight control and/or out of condition

If so, you could join the Adult Education Health Referral Scheme. Just ask your Doctor
or Health Professional to complete and sign the referral form, which can be downloaded here.

You will then be entitled to enrol on one course and pay only half of the advertised price!

We have a wide range of courses to choose from including Yoga, Dance, Tai Chi, Art,
Craft, IT, Languages and more.

When your Health Professional has signed the referral, send it to your local Adult
Education Centre.

Not all advertised courses apply so you will need to speak to a Programme Manager
who will contact you to discuss your needs and help you choose the activity you would
most benefit from.

If you would like more information on this scheme please contact your local Adult Education Centre on 0845 606 5606.
